The Fabrication of Feminine Design
Fabrication is a world that weaves historical processes and individ-uality into physical material. The fabrics we construct into garments, and wear in our lives are often a reflection of our personal identity. I am interested in exploring the way clothes and styling shapes our social and cultural perspectives, and the role of gender/ethnicity in garment design.
‘Frock Consciousness’
Virginia Woolf derived the term ‘frock consciousness’ to define clothing as an expression of our evolving internal landscapes. There is a relationship of reciprocity between clothing and the body, we may wear clothes but sometimes they have the power to wear us. Clothing and textiles, objects confined to the material world, have the power to shape one’s physical identity, inevitably bleeding into the emotional self.
My interest of materials transpires from ordinary objects: pebbles and stones off the shore, clothespins, loose strings, buttons and beads, a silver sheen, a metallic hue, an intoxicating color or a functionale fastener. It is in the findings of these mundane objects that I find creative meaning. These materials are forgotton and found, made and worn to matter.
